Unknown (18th century): Ideal architectural view of the Baths of Novatianus in Rome, 18th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: At the center inscribed in the printing plate: "BAINS DE NOVATIEN | THERMAE NOVATIANAE". Lower right numbered in the printing plate: "2.". Date: 18th century Description: Copperplate engraving with an idealised reconstruction of the so-called Baths of Novatianus, a presumably smaller Roman bath complex. The symmetrical depiction shows typical thermal bath architecture with a central domed building, flanking corner buildings and an enclosed courtyard area. The structure follows classical principles of Roman bathing culture with clearly organised rooms and monumentality. The scenery is enlivened with small-scale figures, which lends the sheet both atmospheric depth and lively antique scenery. A typical example of the antiqueising veduta tradition of the 18th century.
