Date: 18th century Description: Classicist copper engraving depicting the ruins of the Septizodium (Septizonium) in Rome, which was originally built under Emperor Septimius Severus (reigned 193-211 AD). The composition shows the monumental façade of the building with three storeys and colonnades in a dramatic foreshortened perspective. The designation in the French title ("Restes du Sepulcre...") erroneously interprets the building as a tomb. The scene is enlivened with figures and refers to the state of the ruin in the 17th/18th century before Pope Sixtus V demolished large parts of it.
