Unknown (18th century): Portrait of Johann Wooton, from Lavater's Physiognomic Fragments, c. 1775, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Inscribed below in the printing plate with the name of the sitter. Lavater writes about this man: "I don't know the least thing about the man; not even whether the name is correct; nothing about his artistic character, but his face struck me[...]" The sheet comes from Johann Caspar Lavater's Physiognomische Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe. Between 1775 and 1778, he published the multi-volume work in which human characters are explained on the basis of their physiognomy. Well-known artists such as Daniel Chodowiecki, Johann Rudolph Schellenberg or Johann Heinrich Lips provided models for his collection of physiognomics, which contains numerous portraits of well-known and anonymous people.
