Unknown (18th century): Portrait of a Learned Man in Profile, "Meyer, c. 1775, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Inscribed below in the printing plate: "Meyer". The print is from Johann Caspar Lavater's Physiognomische Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe. Between 1775 and 1778, he published the multi-volume work in which human characters are explained on the basis of their physiognomy. Well-known artists such as Daniel Chodowiecki, Johann Rudolph Schellenberg or Johann Heinrich Lips provided models for his collection of physiognomics, which contains numerous portraits of well-known and anonymous people. Date: c. 1775 Description: Portrait of a bust in profile, framed by a laurel wreath. In it small attributes of the sitter's profession: Compass and quill as well as book and key.
