She is the woman of 'The Seven Lucky Gods', known as Shichi Fukujin in Japanese. This group presumably originated in the Muromachi period (1392-1568). Today the custom still exists that an image of the gods should be placed under a pillow on New Year's Day to evoke auspicious dreams. According to legend the lucky gods arrive in town on their ‘treasure ship’ Takarabune on New Year's Day. The ship carries seven intangible treasures including wisdom, knowledge, experience, erudition, bravery, prosperity and longevity as well as happiness and satisfaction. In this scroll, Benzaiten is depicted in all her glory, riding the head of a dragon, her animal attribute, while she plays the biwa lute. This scroll is in overall good condition with minor mold spots, stains on the boarder, and creases. The image is 98 cm long by 35 cm wide.
