103 – A Chinese armorial wine cooler for the Spanish market (José de Gálvez y Gallardo). China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1783. Decorated in famille rose enamels, featuring the arms of José de Gálvez y Gallardo, 1st Marquis of Sonora, enhanced with garlands of flowers. José Bernardo de Gálvez y Gallardo (1720-1787) was a Spanish lawyer and politician. In 1774, he was appointed a member of the General Council of Commerce, Coinage, and Mines. He also served as the Governor of the Council of the Indies and is regarded as one of the key proponents of the Bourbon reforms. This is the second documented service commissioned by the Marquis of Sonora, transported on the Asuncion from Manila to Cadiz in 1784. A terrine from this commission is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, while another is located at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon. José Bernardo de Gálvez y Gallardo (1720-1787) était un juriste et homme politique espagnol. En 1774, il fut nommé membre du Conseil général du commerce, de la monnaie et des mines. Il fut également gouverneur du Conseil des Indes et il est considéré comme l’un des principaux promoteurs des réformes des Bourbons. Il s’agit du second service commandé par le marquis de Sonora, documenté, et transporté sur l’Asuncion depuis Manille en 1784 jusqu’à Cadix.
