96 – A large porcelain plate with armorial decoration for the German market (Anhalt). China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1750. Provenance: Jorge Welsh, Lisbon. Decorated in famille rose enamels, finely painted with the coat-of-arms of Anhalt-Zerbst and Holstein-Gottorp. The border features a frieze of foliage. The complex coat-of-arms painted on this plate belong to Christian Auguste (1690-1747), Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst, and his wife, Jeanne-Élisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp (1712-1760), daughter of the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and sister of Adolphe Frederick, King of Sweden from 1751 to 1771. The first child of the couple, Princess Sophie-Auguste-Fédérale of Anhalt-Zerbst (1729-1796), later became Catherine II of Russia. A plate from this commission, previously in the Albuquerque collection, is illustrated by Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos in The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics: A Collector's Vision , Vol. III, London, 2011, cat. no. 519. A terrine and other pieces from this service are illustrated by John Goldsmith Phillips in China-Trade Porcelain: An Account of Its Historical Background, Manufacture, and Decoration and a Study of the Helena Woolworth McCann Collection , Cambridge, 1956, pl. 27/28, where the arms are incorrectly attributed to the Dukes of Anhalt.
