Breuer was one of a group of pioneers who claimed bent tubular steel as a favored material for their avant-garde furniture. In the late 1920s he developed several designs for so-called cantilever chairs, many of which are now in the collections of major museums. This model consists of a chrome-plated tubular steel construction, with the original salmon-colored iron thread canvas with typical corset lacing. The stool is an elegant companion to the B55 cantilever chair, which is also offered in this auction. The stool is in good original condition with only minor wear consistent with age and use. The dimensions are 45 x 46 x 44 cm (height x width x depth). Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) Marcel Lajos Breuer (1902-1981) was a German-American architect and designer. He ranks among the great modern masters due to his avant-garde furniture designs, developing his pioneering style at the Bauhaus school in Weimar. In 1925, he became the head of the Bauhaus Dessau furniture workshop and shaped the factual-industrial design concept. After his training at the Bauhaus school, he worked for many years in the interior furnishings department under Walter Gropius. Due to political persecution by the Nazi regime, he immigrated to the US and later joined Harvard's architecture faculty.
