A ‘BOYS AT PLAY’ SILK PANEL, CIRCA 19TH CENTURY Of rectangular form, finely embroidered in vivid colors to depict a group of six joyful children, all richly attired in flowing garments adorned with various geometric patterns. The cheerful boys shown engaging with a variety of toys and objects, including one flying a kite, another riding a hobby horse, and a third lighting a small incense burner, while others hold lotus and prunus blossoms in their hands. The figures interspersed with additional sprays of leafy blossoms against an intense vermilion-red ground. Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and few loose threads. Dimensions: 28.7 x 22.6 cm (excl. frame), 41.3 x 31.4 cm (incl. frame) Mounted and framed. (2) This textile is probably a portion of a much larger piece, perhaps a hanging, that would have illustrated many groups of small boys at play in a garden. Items bearing this popular theme were particularly favored as wedding gifts, for the boys symbolize increase, abundance, and future happiness.
