Ɏ A CARVED TORTOISESHELL FRAGRANCE BOX AND COVER, QING DYNASTY China, Guangdong province, Guangzhou, first half of the 19th century. Of circular form with a matching cover, the top richly carved in varying degrees of relief to depict an elaborate figural scene with pavilions and garden courtyards among luxuriant pine trees, mirrored on the underside of the box. Both scenes framed by encircling bands of finely carved leaves and flower heads, which continue along the edges of the cover in a pattern of square chrysanthemums. The rim of the box embellished with a continuous scene of stylized trees interspersed with small houses with sloping roofs. The center with a circular raised area intended for the incision of a monogram, but unused. Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. Condition: Very good condition with surface wear and natural imperfections. Light traces of use to the interior. Few small chips along the inner rim, not affecting the outer appearance of the box, with associated minor fissures. Occasional minute nicks and shallow surface scratches.
