작품 상세
A WOODEN ‘BOOK’ BOX AND COVER, QING DYNASTY China, 18th-19th century. Of rectangular form, fashioned to resemble two books stacked one above the other. The cover emulates a typical title-label design, while the short sides are inlaid with ridged ivory panels simulating stacked sheets of paper. The long side, opposite the hinges, is fitted with four ivory mounts in the form of confronted, stylized dragon heads and a small metal lock. The hardwood (possibly huanghuali) displays an attractive grain and an overall fine, naturally developed patina. The ivory inlays exhibit a pale, honey-toned patina. Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. Condition: Surface wear and traces of use. Some evidence of old repairs, mostly to the interior. Scattered minor nicks, light scratches, mostly to the underside, and occasional minute dents. The underside later inscribed ‘China’ in vermillion red.
