A PAIR OF PALE CELADON AND BROWN JADE ‘BIXIE’ FIGURES, HAN DYNASTY China, 206 BC-220 AD. Carved in a mirror image, each beast with raised head, open mouth revealing teeth and tongue, a pair of curving horns, their muscular bodies slightly crouched and flanked by wings. The semi-translucent stone is of pale celadon color with brown shadings, cloudy white inclusions, and creamy beige areas of calcification. (2) Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. An old label with collector’s numbers ’961 5730’ accompanies the lot. Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear, signs of weathering, traces of prolonged burial, erosion, little surface alterations, and minuscule nibbling. The stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into thin hairline cracks.
