Antique 19th century hand painted Russian icon on wood depicting St. Panteleimon, a venerated saint in Eastern Orthodox religion. The icon features a bust-length portrait of the saint against a gilded background. He is shown as a youthful figure with short dark hair, wearing a white robe with golden details. In his hands, St. Panteleimon holds a medicine box and what appears to be a spoon, symbols of his role as a patron saint of physicians and healers.The saint's head is surrounded by an ornate gold washed halo with intricate openwork patterns, lending a sense of divine radiance upon the figure. The icon is set within a silver oklad (protective cover) that frames the top surface of the icon. This oklad is beautifully decorated with embossed borders and floral motifs to the corners.As a traveling icon, this piece is relatively small and likely intended for personal devotion or protection during journeys.
