Frances Arno Saphro (Ukrainian, 1877-1962) Art Deco Surrealist Needlepoint Tapestry. Silk floss embroidery on burlap. 3'4'' x 2'8'' (102 x 81 cm) Artist Bio: Frances Arno Saphro (Born Frances Charsky) (m. Jay O. Saphro) Born in Poltava, Ukraine, then part of Russia, February 26, 1877. She immigrated to the United States in 1883 and received naturalized citizenship in 1895. She settled in Pueblo, Colorado with her two sons, Waldo Charles Saphro (b. 1910, New York) and Lincoln (b. 1914, Colorado, died age 8). Various newspapers show her to have lived in Pueblo, where she was a teacher, 1921, then in Los Angeles with her son W. Charles Saphro, 1930. According to the 1940 census, Frances and her son had since moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, while her ex-husband lived in the ‘Colorado State Hospital for the Insane’ in Pueblo, CO. She died May 4, 1962 in Pueblo, CO. Biographical research and information provided by the consignor of this collection of Frances Arno Saphro needlepoints. Very few, if any, auction records are found.
