Cross from the cover of an evangelary in engraved copper with traces of gilding and champlevé enamel. Limoges. France. 13th century. 19 x 12 cm. Medieval gospels usually had rigid wooden bindings that, in the thirteenth century, were decorated with champlevé enamels on copper in various elements; the front cover often featured Christ on the cross at the center, in gilded low relief, sometimes enameled on the perizonium.
