Scroll painting, water colour and ink on paper China, 1977 Bai Xueshi (1915-2011) - Chinese artist Seal and calligraphic inscription upper left hand corner Mount on paper and matted with silk brocade, wooden handles Dimensions: 166 x 54 cm Picture: 57 x 41 cm Very good condition Provenance: A German Private Collection This scroll painting from 1977 was painted by the Chinese artist Bai Xueshi (1915-2011) in ink and water colour on paper. It depicts the idyllic landscape surrounding the river Li, which is framed in the foreground by several plants. There are various boats, including houseboats and fishing boats, on the calm and flat river. The background is dominated by the monumental mountains, in front of which houses and trees stand. Due to the blurred outlines of the mountains in the far background the artist has optically limited the picture plane and supplied it with a painterly touch. The painting is on paper with a silk brocade frame. It bears the seal of xueshi changnian (long years of Xueshi) in the upper left hand corner, as well as a calligraphic inscription. The inscription can be read as "In the spring of 1977 Xueshi wrote at River Li". The reverse is marked with a stamp of the gallery "Ron Bao Zhai" that once sold the work and a label identifying the painter "Bai Xueshi zuo". The work is in good condition with slight traces of wear. Some stains, as well as crease folds are visible. The mount has recently been fixed on the bottom and there are fine tears on the top by the hanging. The overall dimensions are 166 x 154 cm and the dimensions of the picture plane are 57 x 41 cm.
