AN OTTOMAN SILK EMBROIDERED SARMA Ottoman Turkey, 19th century Burgundy silk velvet textile, embroidered in gilt threads with arabesques, pink bows, crescents and stylised floral motifs, the borders with a gold thread skirting. The term sarma comes from the Turkish word for 'wrapping' which describes the technique of wrapping gold or silver threads around a core material to create a raised, textured, and often three-dimensional design. 85cm x 80.5cm
