작품 상세

A PERSIAN SILVER BASKET SIGNED JA'FAR Shiraz or Isfahan, Iran, 20th century Octagonal shaped, resting on a flat base, the sides openwork decorated with birds among blossoming branches, the rim adorned with repeated pearls and the centre engraved with a crownded courtly scene in the Safavid style. Marked underneath with workshop/retailer’s mark عمل جعفر (Amal Ja'far / the work of Ja’far). 11.5cm diameter There are two distinctive features in Ja'fari production. The first, to which our example belongs, employs figural imagery inspired by Safavid painting, depicting either courtly gatherings with musicians or single standing figures. The second consists of dense vegetal scrolls inhabited by nightingales. It is likely that Ja’far functioned both as a workshop and a retailer, since silver bearing this mark appears in the engraved Isfahan style as well as in the chased figural style associated with Shiraz.
