작품 상세

"Copper United States, circa 1950 Arthur Smith (1917-1982) Mid-century Modern Wide shaped cuff with cut-out design and applied wire work. 1 4/5" x 5 9/10" (height x length) This dynamic cuff features abstract biomorphic lines that Art Smith found through the undulating forms of Surrealism and Primitivism. Working in a progressive mid-twentieth style, he transformed the material of sculptures into wearable well-designed pieces. The wire feature, soldered onto the base piece, is offset by a beautiful varicolored patina and highlights an open-hole detail which enhances the overall lightweight feeling of the cuff. The cuff is in good condition with slight traces of age and wear. The underside shows loss of patina and the surface shows minimal scratches. It measures 1 4/5" x 5 9/10" (height x length). Arthur Smith (1917-1982) Arthur Smith, commonly known as Art, was born in Cuba of Jamaican ancestry. His family settled in Brooklyn in 1920. He received a scholarship to Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where he studied sculpture. Upon completion of his degree in 1940, he began taking classes in jewelry making at NYU. He worked for Winfred Mason, an up and coming jeweler from Haiti and there he learned to transform metal into the sculptural pieces for which he is so well-known. Inspired by modern art of the period, Smith's jewelry is dynamic in size and form. Art Smith made a variety of strong sculptural jewelry in his Greenwich Village studio from 1940 to the 1970s. His Cornelia Street shop in Greenwich Village was a great success and he remains one of the most important American Modernist jewelers of the mid-twentieth century.
