작품 상세
2nd - 3rd century AD A carved panel in grey schist, the rectangular relief depicting the Buddha seated in meditation beneath a stylised arch, delivering his First Sermon at the Deer Park in Sarnath. The Buddha is shown draped in a monastic robe with deeply carved, rhythmic folds reflecting strong Hellenistic influence. He is flanked by attendants and the Five Ascetics, rendered in animated postures, some with raised arms and expressive gestures, emphasising the narrative vitality characteristic of Gandharan relief sculpture. The panel demonstrates the distinctive synthesis of Greco-Roman sculptural conventions with Buddhist iconography that defines Gandharan art. Size: 260mm x 205mm; Weight: 12.54kg. Provenance: Private London collection; formerly in a Japanese collection acquired before 2003. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
