Dimensions: Height 12 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 32 cm Weight: 4469 grams The sculpture depicts infant Krishna (Bala Krishna), shown lying on his back, an intimate and highly devotional representation emphasizing the god’s childhood aspect. This iconography belongs to the domestic and temple-oriented traditions in which Krishna appears not as a cosmic ruler, but as the beloved divine child. As Bala Krishna, he embodies both vulnerability and divinity: the relaxed reclining posture, softly rounded limbs, and serene facial expression convey innocence and tenderness, while his identity as Vishnu’s eighth avatar affirms his supreme cosmic nature. Such images recall episodes from Krishna’s infancy in Vrindavan, where he is worshipped as the playful, mischievous child whose divine power is revealed through lila, or sacred play. Reclining representations of infant Krishna were particularly favored in private shrines and devotional settings, encouraging an emotional and personal bond between devotee and deity. The posture on the back underscores the nurturing aspect of worship, evoking maternal devotion and protection. The calm modeling and harmonious proportions reflect a mature sculptural tradition, balancing realism with idealization. Surface wear and patina suggest prolonged ritual handling and veneration. This sculpture stands as a compelling example of Bala Krishna iconography, where divine transcendence is expressed through intimacy, childhood innocence, and devotional warmth.
