In his right, he is holding an unidentifiable item. Seemingly lost, the man, who is dressed all in black, is surrounded by a whirl of colours, which almost further emphasize his isolation. Sussmann is especially famous for his emphatic portraits of the orthodox Jewish society. The painting by Heinrich Sussmann is in very good condition with only minimal traces of age and wear. It is signed lower right in pencil with 'Heinrich Sussmann'. Framed in a matt, the frame of the painting shows also hardly any traces of age and wear. The overall dimensions are framed 54 x 42 cm, the dimensions of the image 34.5 x 26.5 cm. Heinrich Sussmann (1904-1986) Heinrich Sussmann was born in the Ukrainian town Tarnopil. He studied from 1925 until 1926 at theAkademie Grande Chaumiere in Paris and from 1927 until 1928 at the ViennaKunstgewerbeschule. During the regime of the National Socialists, Sussmann was due to his Jewish roots, banned from work and later deported to Auschwitz. Sussmann survived and returned in 1945 to Vienna, where he then exclusively focused on the depiction of the Jewish orthodox society.
