Landscapes and figures / Seven drawings / Pencil on paper / 12X13cm to 21X25cm / Five are stamped on the verso with the estate ink stamp, "Nachlass Klara Sussmann-Troitzsch (1877-1968)" and below the stamp, in pencil, "H. Sussmann.".Sussmann, a Jewish painter, graphic designer, illustrator and cartoonist, was a native of Tarnopol, Ukraine. After World War I, he moved with his family to Vienna. He studied art in Paris and Vienna. After the Nazis came to power, he fled with his wife Anni to France, where he joined the French Resistance. In 1944, Sussmann and his wife were arrested and deported to Auschwitz. The couple survived the death camp and after the war, returned to Vienna where Sussmann resumed his artistic endeavors. His oeuvre focused on the Holocaust and the world of Orthodox Judaism. Today his estate is managed by the Jewish Museum in Vienna.
