A LIMITED EDITION WEDGWOOD BLACK BASALT PORTRAIT PLAQUE OF CHIEF BLACKHAWK (NATIVE AMERICAN 1767-1838), ARTIST CHARLES BANKS WILSON (AMERICAN 1918-2013), 1971, modeled by Eric Owen and numbered 131/500, of circular form with the warrior Chief wearing a plumed headdress and Chieftain's necklace enclosed by a conforming border of striding buffalo within a gilt wood frame, reversing to gilt Wedgwood descriptive text and numbers. NOTE: Blackhawk was born in Illinois and became a Chief of the Sauk and Fox Tribes. He was a Warrior Chieftain in opposition to the "white expansion" westward movement and fellow tribes who established friendly relations with them. He distinguished himself in the Blackhawk War of 1832 where he was captured and paraded through the major cities in the east where he was met with great interest. In 1838, he died and lay in state in a fine military uniform given him by none other than General Andrew Jackson, the future President of the United States. Diameter: 7 3/4"
