I/III and w" on the back Cast by Alfred Zöttl, the last Viennese bronze caster - incised mark inside Measurements: 24 x 14 x 17 cm Very good condition and fine patina This expressive bronze head, crafted by the Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka , is utmost special due to its distinctive surface structure. Lovers of classical music will immediately recognise who is depicted here, as it is a compatriot of the sculptor: the Austrian composer Franz Schubert, who died at the young age of 31. Schubert left behind a large and varied body of work consisting of Symphonies and Lieder. The bronze is in very good condition with minimal traces of wear. It is monogrammed "A.H", and stamped "E.A. I/III" on the back. The head, which is hollow inside, is also marked "GUSS A. ZÖTTL WIEN" on the inner edge. The sculpture measures 24 x 14 x 17 cm (length x width x height) Alfred Hrdlicka (1928-2009) Alfred Hrdlicka was born into the politically restless Vienna in 1928 as a son of an active unionist and communist. Already during his early childhood Hrdlicka experienced the brutality of the state: his father was arrested and during the search warrant in his parents' flat, the six year old was beaten up by the police. During the Second World War he and his father went into hiding for a while. After the end of the war, from 1946 to 1952, he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna under Albert Paris von Gütersloh and Josef Dobrowski and later, under the sculptor Fritz Wotruba, too. After his first exhibition "Sculpture, Painting and Prints" in the Viennese Zedlitzhalle, he achieved international renown in 1964 when he represented Austria at the 32nd Biennial with Herbert Boeckl. From 1970 to 1989 he was Professor at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, at the Hochschule für Bildende Küste in Hamburg and at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, as well as the Universität für angewandte Kunst in Vienna. In his works, Hrdlicka examines the grief and world of emotions of mentally ill people, a topic, which, after personal encounters with these ill people, always moved him. Apart from this, he also completed many politically-motivated works, whereby he was always on the side of the left-wing and strongly opposed any kind of violence, war and fascism. He was widely known in Germany and Vienna through his controversial, much-discussed sculptural work, but his prints, too, were given recognition, for example with an exhibition at the Albertina. Here, too, he showed the darker sides of humanity, sexual violence, murder and terror are frequent topics. His figurative, expressionistic works are some of the most important works of contemporary Austrian art.
