Bronze, brown patinated, on a wooden socket Germany, around 1930 Attributed to Arno Breker (1900-1991) - German sculptor and architect Inscribed on the plinth with the foundry mark „W. Geisler, Berlin" Dimensions: 25 cm high; plinth: 9 x 7.5 cm Very good condition This bronze torso fascinates through its anatomical exactness that contrasts with the seemingly untreated surface of the bronze. Because even though the bronze has been covered in a brown patina and has a very fine shine, it is at the same time quite roughly moulded which creates the impression of the bronze's surface being ‚untreated'. A similar contrast arises between the softness of the female body being represented by the hard material bronze. The artist manages all these differences in an incomparably genius manner. The attribution to Arno Breker was made as he created very similar bronze torsi in that period, such as the "Torso der Siegerin" in 1935. As our bronze bears no artist signature, we cannot confirm it to be by Arno Breker with certainty. The bronze is in very good condition. It shows the foundry mark „W. Geisler, Berlin" on the plinth. It is 25 cm high and the plinth's dimensions are: 9 x 7.5 cm. The dimensions of the wooden socket are: 14 cm broad; 14 cm deep; 4 cm high. Arno Breker (1900-1991) Born to a master stonemason in the town of Elberfeld in 1900, Arno Breker already learned his eventual craft early on in the parental enterprise. He first visited the arts school in Elberfelde and from 1920 he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Four years later, he travelled to Paris in order to study the sculptural works of early modernism. There, he met the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim who offered to sell his works in Paris, thus making Breker known in the art scene of Paris, where the artist eventually settled in 1927. He returned to Germany in 1934 after a year of studying in Italy. In Berlin, the repatriate taught at the Akademie der Künste as professor of sculpture. He has remained a controversial figure due to his work for the Nazis during the Third Reich. Numerous exhibits, documentaries as well as scientific publications have been dedicated to the sculptor and architect.
