Lecourtier 1878' and with foundry mark 'LS' Dimensions: 24.6 x 18.5 x 12 cm Very good condition Characteristic animal sculpture by Prosper Lecourtier; small-sized dogs' bronzes of the artist have already fetched up to around €7,000 at international auctions On the occasion of the Paris Salon in 1878, Prosper Lecourtier created a bronze of a tethered Mastiff, measuring approximately 45 cm in height. The present sculpture is a smaller version, probably executed around 1900 with a shimmering dark brown patina. According to the lifelike expression of the original artwork, the present figure also features details such as the functioning clasp attached to the dog collar. The bronze 'Prenez Garde Au Chien' is regarded as one of the most famous works of the animalierProsper Lecourtier. The bronze is signed and dated on the plinth 'P. Lecourtier 1878' and bears as well the foundry mark 'LS'. It is in very good condition considering its age. It measures 24.6 x 18.5 x 12 c Prosper Lecourtier (1851-1924) The French sculptor Lecourtier was born in Meuse. He received his artistic training under Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) in Paris. In 1875 he first took part in the exhibitions of the Paris Salon and was henceforth regularly represented with works. Lecourtier repeatedly received the prestigious award of a medal; at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900, he obtained, for example, the bronze medal. As an animal sculptor, the artist is best known for his lifelike depictions of dogs. Monumental bronzes of the artist are exhibited, for instance, in Buenos Aires or in Wassy, France.
