The sculpture is of brown patinated bronze and stands on a dark green serpentine pedestal. The bronze sculpture was created by the German sculptor and painter Franz Iffland (1862-1935) in around 1880. Depicted is the allegory of painting in the appearance of a man with beard and a toga placed over his left shoulder. The man is holding a brush and a color palette in his hands. His athletically modelled muscles and the upright, confident posture make the object a symbol for creativity and imagination, presenting a good look on every desk. Verso below on the bronze is the signature 'F. Iffland'. The bronze is in very good condition with slight traces of age and wear. The total height, including the pedestal, is 33 cm and the sculpture alone is 22 x 9 x 7 cm (height x width x depth) in size. Franz Iffland (1862-1935) The Berlin sculptor and painter Franz Iffland created portrait busts and bronze figures with mostly mythological or genre-like content. He participated in 1886, 1888, 1890 and 1892 to the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1893 some of his works were presented in the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin.
