Lecourtier’ on the plinth Foundry mark ‘VRAI BRONZE’ on the post Dimensions: 33.5 x 24.5 x 16 cm Very good condition Characteristic animal sculpture by Prosper Lecourtier, whose repertoire included many variations of depictions of dogs On the occasion of the Paris Salon in 1878, Prosper Lecourtier made a bronze of a tethered Mastiff at the height of approximately 45 cm. The sculpture offered here is a smaller version and was probably cast around 1900. Its lifelike character corresponds to the original piece and also features details such as the chain on the post. The bronze ‘Prenez Garde Au Chien‘ is regarded as one of the most famous works of the animalier Prosper Lecourtier. Condition: The bronze is in very good condition according to age. It measures 33.5 x 24.5 x 16 cm. Prosper Lecourtier (1851-1924) The French sculptor Lecourtier was born in Meuse. He received his artistic training under Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) in Paris. In 1875 he first took part in the exhibitions of the Paris Salon and was henceforth regularly represented with works. Lecourtier repeatedly received the prestigious award of a medal; at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900, he obtained, for example, the bronze medal. As an animal sculptor, the artist is best known for his lifelike depictions of dogs. Monumental bronzes of the artist are exhibited, for instance, in Buenos Aires or in Wassy, France.
