Nooms, R. (called Zeeman) (±1623-1667). "Haecse, delfse ofte leitse nacht scuiten." Drawing, brush and grey wash, with caption in brush and grey wash below the image and numb. "24", within black framing lines (13,5x24 cm.). - Sm. unobtrusive (burn) hole in the sky; very vaguely stained in lower caption; the drawing has been blind traced in outlines. Otherwise in fine condition, on paper with a sm. watermark of a posthorn (cf. Laurentius 624a), dateable around 1650. = PREPATORY DRAWING in reverse for the etching "Haegse, Delfse en Rotterdamse Nacht-Schuÿten" published in the series Verscheijde Schepen en Gesichten van Amstelredam Naer 't leven afgetekent en opt cooper gebracht door Reinier Nooms, alÿas Zeeman (Hollstein 57, not mentioning this drawing). Our copy resembles similar drawings made in the surroundings of Amsterdam, showing i.a. the Rokin and the Gelderse Kade (see the Hollstein introduction). "The night ferries sailed from the landing stage on Rokin when the evening bell rang in the Exchange. They were designed to carry a large number of passengers, who were accommodated either in the wooden cuddy on deck (first class), which could take eight people, or down in the hold, which seated twenty-six."
