Brush and India ink drawing with white body colour on firm grey-brown paper, a charcoal and pencil drawing to verso 30.5 x 27 cm. Inscribed by Maria Marc to the lower edge, with an estate stamp to verso. - With a soft horizontal crease to the centre. Small tears to the upper right and lower left corners. Several small brown stains due to the paper. In the present sketches he was able to depict the many different aspects of the animal with sure lines. As early as 1902, the artist had begun to observe sheep on the Staffelalm in Bavarian Kochel in order to memorize their forms and to then draw them. Franz Marc wanted to create a symbol, to express the rhythm of nature, and through this his pantheistic feelings.
