LOIS PREGARTBAUER* (Misselsdorf 1899 - 1971 Vienna) Hamburg Port pastel/paper 47 x 65 cm signed Luis Pregartbauer SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 300 - 600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 300 Lois Pregartbauer (Alois Pregartbauer, Louis Pregartbauer, Luis Pregartbauer) was an Austrian painter and draftsman. He studied briefly at the Academy of Fine Arts, the Technische Hochschule (Technical College) and the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in Vienna, and he took private lessons from Erich Wagner (Vienna Kineticism) and stage designer Remigius Geyling. Essentially, Pregartbauer is considered an autodidact. He was a member of the Hagenbund, Vienna (1931-38), the Vienna Künstlerhaus (1938-45 and from 1963) and the Vienna Secession (1946-63). Stylistically, Pregartbauer's work from the "New Objectivity" in the early 1930s to constructivist tendencies after 1945 remained predominantly committed to the representational. He achieved his highest mastery in charcoal drawing and pastel painting. In 1937, Lois Pregartbauer was part of the founding collective for the cultural magazine “Plan”, which was banned in 1938 and republished in 1945. In 1946 he worked on the founding program for the art school of the city of Linz (founding president 1947-1949: Karl Hauk). Pregartbauer worked in the technical service for the Wiener Verkehrsbetriebe (Vienna Public Transport) from 1913 to 1950 and did military service in both world wars.
