This painting of high quality is probably a replica by the workshop of Carlo Dolci after a work by the master in the Palazzo Pitt, Florence. Dolci´s "The Martyrdom of Saint Andrew", dated 1646, is considered to be one of the artist´s major works. Replicas of the composition by Dolci himself in different sizes (Thieme-Becker) and by the workshop exist.
