It follows a composition of Dolci, Christ in the house of Simon the Pharisee, now in the Corsham Court, London. The painting illustrates the Bible passage from the Gospel of Luke, 7-36-50, according to which Christ was invited to eat at Simon's house. As a sinner heard about it, she joined the meal with an alabaster vessel containing well scenting oil. She approached Christ, wet his feet with her tears, dried, kissed and anointed them, whereupon Christ forgave her all her sins. The present painting is characterized by a wealth of detail, a fine brushstroke and a great expressive power in the depiction of the figures. Also the repoussoir figure on the right edge, which serves to enhance the depth effect, is particularly striking. The canvas was recently relined. The paint surface is quite thin in places. Inspection under UV light reveals two vertical strips of restorations, probably to repair damage caused by folds. In addition, there are further small restorations as well as major and minor areas of retouching to the background and some small areas of retouching to the figures. The gilt wood frame show only minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 52 x 56.5 cm. The paper dimensions are 32.7 x 40 cm. Carlo Dolci (1616-1686) Born in Florence, the Baroque painter Carlo Dolci entered the studio of Jacopo Vignali around 1625. In 1648, he was admitted to the Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno in Florence. His daughter Agnese was his pupil and painted in his style. Works of Carlo Dolci are on display in major museum collections, including the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the J.
