Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, N.A. (British/American, 1819-1905), "A Blacksmith's Shanty, Franklin County, New York", 1859, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, titled en verso, 21-1/4" x 27-1/4". Framed. Provenance: Collection of Phyllis Hudson, New Orleans, Louisiana. A native of Liverpool, Tait commenced his artistic career at the age of twelve when he was apprenticed to the Manchester art firm of Agnew and Zapetti; during his years with the company, the young man learned the rudiments of lithography and taught himself to paint. In 1850 Tait moved to the United States, eventually settling in New York City, where he specialized in sporting, frontier, and work-a-day scenes. Between 1852 and 1864, the popular American company of Currier and Ives produced numerous lithographs after Tait's paintings. Tait was named an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1858.
