John Singer Sargent (Massachusetts/United Kingdom, 1856-1925) BUTTON, BUTTON, SHAW'S GOT THE BUTTON (DR. DUNHAM'S BUTTON) oil on canvas mounted on cardstock, unframed, signed & inscribed card H6 1/4" W4 3/4" together with photos of Dr. Shaw and his residence, and envelope identifying the button as Dr. Dunham's in Sargent's hand. (6pcs) Provenance: Collection of a Southern gentleman Purchased from the estate collection of the late Dr. and Mrs. Albert Shaw of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY & Winter Park, FL Literature: Ormond, Richard and Elaine Kilmurray. Other Notes: Editor, writer, scholar, publisher, and lecturer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Albert Shaw's achievements in journalism were almost unparalleled. He was in Teddy Roosevelt's inner circle as a member of his Kitchen Cabinet and established REVIEW OF REVIEWS in America. This painting section, a gift from Sargent to Shaw, is possibly the remnants of the Portrait of Dr. Carroll Dunham completed c. 1890 and listed in the catalogue raisonne as "apparently destroyed."
