Oil on canvas, relined Italy, 17th century Workshop of Luca Giordano (1634-1705) - Italian painter and printmaker in etching Popular subject in European art history Overall dimensions, framed: 98 x 88 cm Good condition Provenance: Collection Tenor Michele Tiziano, Germany After the painting by Giordano from the Collection Ruggi D´Aragona, now in the Museo Diocesano, Salerno The present painting depicts the biblical scene of the Adoration of the Magi and was painted by an artist of the 17th century, deeply influenced by Luca Giordano and possibly active in his workshop. Giordano maintained an extremely successful and extensive workshop which worked for numerous Italian and European patrons. In this regard, he contributed significantly to the spreading of the Baroque style in Europe. Giordano had developed a style which combined elements of Venetian and Roman painting. There are several versions of the present subject known and presented nowadays in important European collections such as the Spencer Collection in Northamptonshire and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. The painting is in good condition considering its age. The canvas has been relined and there are abrasions and scratches around the edges caused by the pressure of the frame. The paint surface is thin in the darker details and has been consolidated. The UV light inspection is hindered by the thick varnish, but it is still possible to see an area of restoration lower right (circa 3 x 4 cm) and light lines of strengthening to the darker details of the composition. The gilded frame shows light traces of age and use and measures 98 x 88 cm. The size auf the stretcher is 77 x 63 cm. Luca Giordano (1634-1705) Luca Giordano was born in Naples and started his artistic training under his father and later under the well-known artist Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652). As a young painter he traveled to Rome and also worked in other important art centers such as Parma, Florence and Venice. From 1690 to 1703 Giordano was active in Spain, where he was appointed Chevalier by Charles II. The artist maintained a very successful workshop and produced numerous of paintings for international patrons as well as frescoes for churches and palaces. Works by Luca Giordano are today presented in international collections such as the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Belvedere in Vienna.
