Meijer, curator at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague (private correspondence) Dimensions: 47 x 58 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany Delicate and often small sized still lifes by Jacob Marrel are very sought after collectable items; his magnificent still life composition fetch up over €350,000 on the international art market This decorative and delicately executed still life is a typical work of the German painter Jacob Marrell who was a well-known still life painter of the 17th century. Marrel is probably best known for his paintings of sumptuous vases of flowers, set on a ledge or in a niche; but from mid-century onwards, he also painted a small number of modestly-sized fruit pieces. Jacob Marrel was a painter, draughtsman and engraver, but he was occasionally also active as an art dealer. Although he was born in Germany and spent the greater part of his life in Frankfurt am Main, he may, nevertheless, has regarded himself as a follower of the Dutch School. The canvas is unlined and the painting is well presented. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the background, especially lower right. There is a repaired horizontal tear of c. 20 cm in the middle of the right side. The wooden frame is in good condition and only shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 60.5 x 71 cm and the size of the stretcher is 47 x 58 cm. Jacob Marrel (1614-1681) Since 1624, Jacob Marrel lived in Frankfurt am Main, where he was a pupil of Georg Flegel. Around 1630, he worked under Jan Davidsz. de Heem in Utrecht, where he mainly focused on still life painting and in 1679 he returned to Frankfurt am Main. Some paintings by Jacob Marrel are signed with his Latinized name 'Jacobus Marrellus'. Marrel's works are on display in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe.
