Sebastian Vrancx was one of the Antwerp artists working simultaneously with Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Henrik van Balen and Frans Francken the Younger. His is considered the inventor of the Flemish military piece. This painting, which probably belonged to a series representing the months, is known to exist in three other slightly different examples (photo-archive RKD). The work was probably made in the first decade of the 17th century, as Vrancx later painted mainly battle scenes and robberies in wooded landscapes using a more intense colour palette.
