It describes an area around Civitella at the Sabin hills. The red evening sun has already disappeared behind the hills and renders the silhouettes of the dark landscape a serene atmosphere. A resting shepherd and his herd are depicted at the edge of a pond and gently animate the scene. Bernhard Fries perfectly knew how impress with his Italian landscapes that captured the magic of light, color and shade. The painting is signed and dated lower left 'Bernhard Fries 1850'. The canvas is slightly torn lower left (of approximately 5.5 cm). The paint surface is affected by a few small abrasions and is a bit dented. The canvas has been restored on the right and shows a small supported area on verso. Inspection under UV light reveals light areas of retouching to the depiction and the sky. The stretcher measures 70.5 x 94 cm. Bernhard Fries (1820-1879) Bernhard Fries was born in Heidelberg and was the son of the well-known banker, manufacturer and art collector Christian Adam Fries (1766-1847). He was trained by the historical painter Carl Koopmann in Karlsruhe and completed his studies at the Academy of Arts in Munich, between 1835 and 1837. Since 1838 he repeatedly traveled to Italy and also deepened his artistic skills at Academy in Dusseldorf. He established as a landscape painter and seems to have been deeply inspired by Carl Anton Joseph Rottmann (1797-1850). Examples of his artistic output can be found, for instance, at the Neue Pinakothek and the Schackgalerie in Munich.
