Signed lower right: Bernhard Fries Bernhard Fries was the youngest of three brothers - the elder being Ernst and Wilhelm Fries - who all became successful painters. Bernhard was taught at the academies of Munich and Düsseldorf, whereby he cultivated particularly close contact with the artists of the Düsseldorf School, including Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Andreas Achenbach. Fries also took several extended sojourns to Italy. In Gottfried Keller's work “Green Henry”, Bernhard Fries served as inspiration for the painter character Lys.
