Oil on canvas Germany, c. 1900 Circle of Eduard von Grützner (1846-1925) – German painter, especially noted for his genre paintings of monks Signed at the lower left ‘Ch. Mussard’ In an elaborately florally carved wooden frame Dimensions of canvas: 68.5 x 55 cm Good condition Genre painting in the style of works by German painter Eduard von Grützner This painting invites the viewer to follow into the wine cellar for a wine tasting. Already sitting at the table are two men in historicizing vestments, drinking wine, smoking and playing an instrument. The painting is obviously inspired by paintings of Eduard von Grützner, who often banned scenes in wine or beer cellars on canvas, most of the time however featuring monks. Whereas here, we are dealing with two noblemen, who are courting a woman. The oil painting is signed at the lower left ‘Ch. Mussard’. It is in a good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The surface bears craquelure in places. Under UV-light, some small touch-ups appear, e.g. near the face of the man with hat and along the edges. The dimensions of the canvas measure 68.5 x 55 cm, while the dimensions including the carved frame are 100.2 x 87 cm. (nlu) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
