Oil on canvas Germany, 20th Century O. Birckholtz – German Painter of the 20th Century Signed lower left ‘O. Birckholtz’ Copy of Franz von Defregger (1835-1921) 40 x 33 cm Good condition Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 1000 EUR This cheerful little portrait by O. Birckholtz (1891-1978) dates to the 20υth Century. Birckholtz, a German painter, was known to copy the motifs of his 19υth century colleagues, albeit with slight alterations. This piece takes after the Southern German historical painter Franz von Defregger (1835-1921). The painting shows a smiling huntsman with a meerschaum pipe. His clothes are unmistakeably those of a hunter; he is wearing a green cap and a green jacket. He rests his rifle on his shoulder while holding a large pipe in his right hand. A smile spreads across his face, his cheeks are reddened; smoking a pipe is evidently a relaxing end to a successful day. The painting by O. Birckholtz is in good condition with slight age-related signs of wear and use. UV light reveals restoration on the varnish, as well as a small depression on the side. It measures 40 x 33 cm in its frame and 30 x 24 cm (canvas). Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
