Note: Hans Baluschek was an important German painter and graphic artist whose father was a railway engineer. The railroad was a frequent subject for the artist throughout his early career, when his focus was on depictions of ordinary working people, and continued after he solidified his opposition to Imperial Germany by joining the Berlin Secession in 1900. Baluschek was denounced as a degenerate artist by the Nazis when they took power in 1933.
