Zeno Diemer 21‘ Dimensions: 85 x 131 cm Gilt ornamental frame: 95,5 x 140 cm Characteristic and dramatically composed marine scenery by the artist Condition: The inspection under UV light reveals some repaints to the sky and the ship and also scattered retouches to the waves. The left area of the sky with a larger and few minor restorations, each with canvas patches on the backside. There is some slight rubbing to the edges of the canvas and light pressure marks along the underlying wooden stretcher bars. The frame shows some defects. Michael Zeno Diemer (1867-1939) Michael Zeno Diemer studied at the Academy in Munich under Gabriel von Hackl and Alexander von Liezen-Mayer. After studying he travelled along the coasts of southern Italy. The artist initially gained recognition with his watercolors of the Alps. In 1891 Diemer was represented in the German exhibition in London. Two years later he travelled to New York, where he created a diorama for the World's Fair in Chicago together with Beatus Wieland. Mountains and seascapes eventually became the central subject of his oeuvre. After the acquaintance with the director of the shipping company Hapag, Diemer undertook regular voyages during which he found many of his motifs. As a passionate sailor he became a member of the Imperial Yacht Club in Kiel. During his lifetime, the artist took part in many major exhibitions and was honored with several awards. Michael Zeno Diemer created numerous paintings and panoramas. In his commissions he also documented current events such as the Zeppelin landing in Munich on April 1, 1909.
