John Frederick Loos Belgian, fl. 1861-1895 The "Jessie Burrill" Reducing Sail off Beachy Head Signed John Loos and dated Antwerp 1880 (lr) Oil on canvas 20 1/2 x 30 inches (52 x 76.2 cm) The "Jessie Burrill" was built in Church Point, Nova Scotia in 1879. Her sailing career came to an end only three years later. In March 30, 1882, carrying a cargo of kerosene to Shanghai, she was dismasted by a typhoon and abandoned in shallow water off Tung-ying Island. Her cargo caught fire, and the ship was totally destroyed. Fortunately, all aboard were rescued by passing ships. C
