Arnold Whitman Knauth (1918-2017) Original oil on canvas. Circa 1961. This lovely landscape painting has been recently cleaned and given a new frame. Expect to pay $1500 and up for this painting in a gallery. Art: 16 x 27. Frame 22 x 31. Arnold Knauth was born in New York City and studied at Harvard University, the National Academy of Design, the Hibbard Summer School of Painting and the Wellfleet Art School with Xavier Gonzalez. He has done most of his work in Rockport, MA and works primarily in oil. He specializes in marine, cityscapes and landscapes although he also paints still lifes. The quality and beauty of his schooners is well known. Knauth comes from a very accomplished family. He is named after his uncle who was a highly recognized maritime lawyer in New York City. His father was a well known and published economist specializing in the retail field while his grandfather, George Henry Clements, was an established artist who worked and studied in both America and France. His wife, Geraldine, was also a painter (under the name of Jerri Ricci) specializing in watercolor and was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions as well. In addition to art work, Knauth is an avid sailor and has cruised extensively on his various yachts as well as competed in many regattas. Knauth has exhibited at the National Academy of Design, National Arts Club, the North Shore Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Rockport Art Association, the Salmagundi Club and the St. Botolph Club. He has won many awards for his work including the Bronze medal from the National Art Club, the Epstein Prize for best oil from the North Shore Arts Association, the Gold medal for watercolor from the Allied Artist, the well known Salmagundi Club prize and most recently, the Aldro T. Hibbard Memorial Award for excellence in any medium from the Rockport Art Associations 2009 Summer show.
