The vintage gelatin silver print on barite paper, mounted on cardboard, depicts the Spanish painter, printmaker and sculptor Pablo Picasso in his Villa La Californie in Cannes. The outstanding artist is shown during the presentation of a portrait, smiling whimsically. Magnum photographer René Burri spent the summer of 1957 with Pablo Picasso, his family and friends. A series of exceptional, intimate photographs of the artist and his surroundings resulted from this time. The photograph is in good condition with slight signs of usage such as minor deterioration at the margins. The number '24"' is shown on the upper margin on the front. The photograph is mounted on a cardboard with photo corners below passe-partout. On the reverse side the cardboard is marked with 'Rene Burri Picasso #315' and shows a typwritten paper label 'Rene Burri P.Picasso Villa Cannes 57'. The sheet size of the photograph is 25.7 x 15.2 cm and the total dimensions are 30 x 40 cm. René Burri (b. 1933) Born in Zurich in 1933, René Burri took his first photographs of a celebrity at the tender age of 13, when he photographed Winston Churchill in his home town. Burri studied photography as well as film at the Academy of Arts in Zurich. After his studies he started making documentary films and took photographs of celebrated architects, artists and politicians. In 1955 Burri became an associate of Magnum Photos. His photographic portrait of Ernesto Ché Guevara is still his most famous photograph today. A major retrospective of his work was held from 2004 to 2005 at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris which subsequently toured many other European museums.
