In black and white gold frame Image dimensions: 24.9 x 18.2 cm Very good condition The three-part cycle 'Volk' is one of the most important print series of the first third of the 20th century; the auction record for the complete series is set at €5.220 From 1925 to 1927 the German artist Hans Baluschek created in three parts the extensive cycle 'Volk'. The total of 37 lithographs showed the lives of ordinary people in Germany in the 1920s. The present sheet 'Wochenende', showing a pair of parents with pram, is from the third part, which was published in 1927. The lithograph is signed lower right in pencil 'Hans Baluschek' and lower left signed in the stone 'HBaluschek'. Additionally it is titled lower center in pencil 'Wochenende' and inscribed and dated lower left in pencil 'Originallithographie 1927 „Volk" III. 10.'. The sheet is mounted to a mat at spots at the reverse sheet edges and aside from a minor surface soil in very good condition. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The image measures 24.9 x 18.2 cm, the sheet 38.1 x 27.8 cm. The framed dimensions are 47 x 38 cm. Hans Baluschek (1870-1935) Hans Baluschek was born in Breslau in 1870 and moved to Berlin in 1890 where he studied at the Royal Academy of Art. The gallery Gurlitt was the first to exhibit his work in 1885 and in 1897 he took part in the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin with two works of art. These works established Baluschek's membership of the Berlin Secession. In 1920 his novel 'Enthüllte Seelen' (Uncovered Souls) was published, consolidating his renown as an author as well. In 1933 the national socialists classified his work as 'degenerate art' and he was forced to move out of his studio. As a major representative of critical realism Baluschek captured the spirit of the times and the social tensions of the Wilhelmine age. He was fascinated by the metropolis, its industry and technology. His extensive oeuvre includes socio-critical themes, realist representations of urban and industrial environments as well as book illustrations.
