Born in Vienna in 1920, he studied under Josef Dobrowsky and Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1946 to 1950; later a professor of drawing and freelance artist, he died in Vienna on 6 March 2017 at the age of 97. Katzmann created expressive portraits, nudes and figurative compositions with precise drawing technique and painterly freedom, influenced by Dobrowsky and Boeckl; typical are psychological portraits, dynamic lines and a balance between realism and expressionism in oil and drawing.
